Roam Verona’s ancient streets while learning the city’s fascinating history with sites and routes tailored to your specific interests.

The city of Verona in Northern Italy has had a violent and artistic past, one which Shakespeare so beautifully portrayed in the epic romantic story Romeo and Juliet. Dangerous family feuds, romance and drama have been a part of the city’s history ever since it was ruled by the tyrannous but art-loving Scaligeri clan in the Middle Ages.

Multiple fratricides caused the Scaligeris to be chased out of the city back in the 14th century. Many beautiful pieces of architecture survive from the time of the Scaligeris, and this classical guided walking tour in English is designed to introduce you to many of the most important ones.

Guided Tour Verona

The tour begins at the Arena, which is a splendid amphitheatre dating back to AD 30 and happens to be one of the best preserved amphitheatres of the world. The magnificent amphitheatre hosts famous, massive opera performances even today. In ancient times, it could seat as many as 30,000 spectators.

Next, you come out onto Piazza Bra, which is the square off which the arena stands. It is the largest piazza in Verona, lined with cafés and restaurants and other famous buildings that give you a feel of the real Italy.

Your third stop is the Piazza delle Erbe or the market square, which was the town’s forum during the Roman Empire, and lined with impressive ancient, medieval and Baroque architecture. Next up, you will be able to admire the many 14th century buildings at the Piazza dei Signori, which lies at the heart of Verona.

This will be followed up by a visit to the Gothic Scaliger tombs where lie buried five members of the Scaliger family. This will be followed by a visit to the Palazzo della Ragione, a majestic square building with an inner courtyard between the two piazzas of delle Erbe and dei Signori.
